So after hearing a lot about this new Japanese drama, “Last Friends,” I decided to actually look it up. I guess what made it prominent to any non-J-Drama fan was the fact that Utada Hikaru’s latest single, “Prisoner of Love,” was used as its theme song. I’ll digress here for a moment and say that that song is one of the best songs I’ve heard in a long time, and it fits the drama’s theme so perfectly. It’s no wonder the song is so popular and successful. It’s a song bursting with emotion and tension, and if you haven’t heard it before, you need to hear it now.
So as I was saying, I decided to give Last Friends a look see, and prayed that I could find it subbed. (But what can’t you find on the Internet nowadays?) So with little effort, I managed to catch episode one on Megavideo. From the very start I was drawn in.
The show starts off with what seems to be the main protagonist — Michiru — looking back on the past, and that sort of beginning is gripping enough in itself. It makes me wonder, what happened? Why’s she no longer in Tokyo? How did she get pregnant? And questions like that. But then we’re taken back to the past to see how things went down.
The narrative of the drama is what interests me the most as Michiru is now able to interpret her situations in the past clearly because of her knowledge now. But she never comes out and reveals the details, so we’re left to see for ourselves.
I won’t go on about the story’s plot because: 1. I don’t want to ruin it and 2. I don’t want to ramble. All I’ll say is that the characters so far are intriguing. There’s the tomboyish Ruka, the seemingly charming Sousuke, the cute and innocent Michiru, the kind and cool Takeru, and the fun-loving Eri.
Though I’ve only seen one episode, I’ve learnt so much already and the show’s been able to put me through happy-sad-angry-happy just like that, which is what I like. I already feel an attachment to Michiru, Ruka and Takeru and maybe the others will come along, too. But I feel I’ll never like Sousuke, regardless of the sad story hiding under his table.
Anywho, definitely check out this drama, even if you’re not into the stuff. I’m not really into watching dramas or soaps, but I like what I see in Last Friends so far.
